DVL BIKE RIDE ………..Nice day, not a great turnout but we still had a good time. Bob M & Tracy E, Iain, Taimi and YT. It was a little bit cool at the start and a little bit perfect by the end. Didnt see any snakes today, just a bit too cool out
The condition of the roads was great with very little mud. But in that mud there was a story. Lots of tracks and I saw more deer tracks today than I’ve ever seen at the lake. Also saw more Californus Fishermanus than Ive ever seen at the lake. Hopefully next week we will have a bigger turnout for SRP and better weather.

Black Mountain Summit 7k Run ![]()
What a difference a week makes. Last weekend many of us went to Vail lake for the Xterra Races an lost some serious weight ( I lost 6 lbs on Sunday myself) It was HOT. This week however the temperatures dropped almost 50 degrees. Well today Ingy, Linda and I all made the trip to Black Mountain. We were not sure what to expect as its been raining of late and this was an off road race up a mountain. Personally Id taken the entire week off from training as I was cooked from the inside out (dehydration) and wanted to be in as good of shape as I could for today. Ingy showed up to race with a case of what he claimed was streph throat but Im sure it was Ebola. Linda as always looked like she was ready to run. And she did that 21k last Saturday in 100 degree heat.
They told us before the start that it would be muddy in places and that the mud would stick to your shoes making them heavy. The race started out uphill on a very steep street. We would run maybe a 100′ to the end of the street and the beginning of the trail head. The first thing I noticed as I hit the dirt was that it was in great shape. The course however wasn’t easy. It was tough. Lots of strewn rocks, mostly baseball ankle twisting size. Sometimes scattered and sometimes in rock fields. At the start Linda and Ingy disappered into the distance and I tried to conserve some energy. Or at least that was my excuse. About 1/2 way up the hill around the 1 mile mark I see Ingy and he’s slowing down. It takes awhile but I finally catch up and he’s on the verge of getting sick. I take off ahead of him (something that has never ever happened before) and I keep plugging until I get to the top. At the top is a big radio tower complex that we run around and a quick look at the scenery and it was back down. Now it got tricky. All those rocks are one thing when your climbing slowly, and quite another when your going as fast as your feet will turn over on the downhill. Id gone about a 1/3 of the way down when I encountered probably the toughest of the rock fields. Still I was catching others in front of me and that felt pretty good but at the same time I could hear a pair of feet closing on me and I just new it had to be Ingy. The foot falls sounded hungry if that’s even possible. I had a sense of being persued by a Great White Shark. Me and those footsteps behind me would slalom our way thru some other runners and near the bottom of that section I would get passed by you know who. I knew he wasn’t going to let me beat him, no way no how, not on this planet. I somehow managed to hang on a few steps behind him for quite aways and then we started to hit a few small uphills as the trail undulated it’s way down. When we’d hit those Ingy would start walking an I would close on him and even pass him on one or two more occasions. But everytime it went down he’d go back by. Id keep him at about a 7 second margin until the last steep downhill. It was here that he could really open it up and it was here that I had to back it down. He’d end up beating me by about 20 seconds. And Linda was waiting for us where it turned from dirt to asphalt, just feet from the finish, and it was good to get her encouragement. Now I know that Ingy had a bad day, he was coughing up a lung when we got done and looked pretty under the weather. And as bummed as I was for Ingy, I HAD A BLAST. I loved the course, the air temp and the conditions. And it was so much freaking fun to be able to race with my buddy. And to even be able to go back and forth a bit. Who knew all it would take was for him to spot me 7 years and a case of Ebola.
Ingy would win his AG and Linda and I would go home with only our memories of this totally bitchen course.
I dont have the results but I think the winners time was like 28 minutes. And I came in at about 43 minutes to give you some sort of idea of what it was like.
Well gotta go get ready for tomorrows bike ride……later
5/20/08

Xterra Vail Lake 2008

Wow what a weekend. On Saturday we had Trotters in all 3 runs. And a few of us Kim, Dan, Victor, and myself showed up to cheer on our comrades. It was hot, no make that HOT! I think the mercury topped at about 102. The run courses were a tiny bit hilly. Just teasin’ the course map looked like the Alps. It was tuff, really really tuff. These courses are not recommended for sissy’s. Or normal people for that matter. You have to be just a tiny bit off center to even attempt to run these races. And the heat just made it all the nuttier.
Monica and Ingy ran in the 5k. Ingy has had a bad cold but he wasn’t about to waste his entry so he went out there and soldiered thru the event like a trooper. It wasn’t fast but he finished and looked like ________ (fill in the blank) afterwards. Monica was on her “A” game (what’s new eh?) and showed up ready to rumble. She finished 2nd woman and 3rd O/A. Perhaps it should be mentioned the only female to beat her has only been out of diapers about 10 years or so.
.
The 10k was run on a two loop course and at the end of the first loop it was Trotter friend Brigid Freyne running in the First Woman position. Not too far back came Taimi (who told me before the race that she was just gonna take it easy) Somewhere on the next climb Taimi overtook Brigid and they swapped positions for the finish. Taimi ended up 1st woman and 5th overall. Brigid finished 2nd woman and 7th overall. Just a short ways back came Steve Altfillisch he finished 12th overall.
At the front of that race was Monicas son Ryan and two of his buddies. They went 1,2,3. What was sorta funny was as the 3 young men approached the finish line they all held hands and planned on crossing the line as 1. But right at the line one of them leaned forward to take the win…hehehe
We only had one runner crazy enough to run the 21k race which by the way was held on the Triathlon bike course. Which also by the way was a killer course. That Trotter was Linda Dreese who remarkably looked great at the finish and she was out in that Hot sun for about 2:46. A big “We’re not Worthy” bow to you Linda :)
Sunday:
Sunday was the day for the Triathlons. Of which there were 2. One race was approximately 2x the distance of the other. Tracy Ellis opted for the longer distance (Championship) race. Dan, Kim and I went the shorter route. Fortunately for us it was cooler than it had been on Saturday………by 1 whole degree!. It was just getting warm when the first wave of Tracy’s race hit the water. The short course athletes would wait an additional hour to start. Tracy’s swim was 1500 yards. She had just finished her swim (and looked strong exiting the water I might add) as we were getting ready for our race. Tracy hit T1, got some food in her and off she went for what would be a loooong ride in the heat. A short while later it was our turn. Our swim was 750 yds. Not too long but a respectable distance, and by the way “no wetsuits allowed” Wetsuits for many are a security blanket. This caused some stress in some athletes. For me the swim was one of my best ever. It felt effortless and the water was clean, albiet for some algae. I’d started near Kim on the beach and after I’d gotten a 100 yds out or so I noticed it was her swimming off my right side. I breathe on my right and she on her left so I could see her clearly. It’s kind of comforting swimming with someone you know and I know if I started to drown that she’d come to my rescue………you would come to my rescue right?
I lost track of kim about half way across the lake. But on the way back also about the half way mark I once again saw kim right off my shoulder. We’d hit the boat ramp 1 second apart, me following. Our bikes were racked just about 20′ apart so we yaked as we hurriedly got ready for the bike. We’d leave T1 side by side. This was pretty cool.

We hadn’t been on the bike a 1/2 mile and I looked over at her and uttered some expletive as I realized I’d forgotten my camelbak. I knew I was in trouble but I didn’t know just how much trouble. We’d ride together or nearly so until we got on the Damn Dam hill. Its a 600′ tall climb in 1.2 miles. And it’s tuff, really tuff. Kim passed me part way up the hill and Kim can kick my ass all over the mountain when it comes to climbing. But this time the trail was so littered with bodies and bikes that she had problems getting thru them. At about the half way mark of the climb she stopped for a few seconds to take a drink from her bottle of Carbpro. And what does this selfless athlete do but hand me the bottle and say “here dougie take a drink”. Nurse Kim
We’d take back off and try to ride where we could and push when we had too. Kim pulled away for a bit but hit another bottle neck of bikes and I caught back up. At the top of the climb she again stopped for a drink and again offered me a drink. I handed her back her bottle and took off and that was the last time I saw her for awhile. Im ok on the flats and better on the downs. But I was starting to feel spent, I figured not because of liquid but because I was trying hard and this course was tuff and by now its getting really warm. The course was advertised as 10.5 miles. Turned out to be closer to 13.4 miles. I’d have one more drink of water at an aid station and I still didnt connect my fatigue with hydration. But by now (this is about mile eight ) my legs are toast. But I just dug deep and kept pluggin’ away. The last uphill on the bike about did me in but it was downhill the last mile or so so when you came into T2 you actually felt pretty good (for a moment anyways) Plus you had people cheering you on. It was as I dismounted the bike that I heard my name and I looked over to see Dan sitting in the grass. I asked as I went by if he was finished already and he hollared back that he DNF’d. Turns out he broke his derailleur hanger off the rear. Also right there cheering us on was Bob M (Tracys S.O)

It turns out that at this point I had put 4 min 10 seconds on Kim, not that it would matter and at that time I had no idea where she was. I realized as I finally put on my camel bak that my day was about over too. I felt like I was a zombie. I would manage to sorta shuffle foot around the Transition area trying to look good but as soon as I rounded the corner out of sight I started walking and it was walking that Id continue to do the entire run course. About a 1/10th mile later I found myself staring up a 40 story climb and thought to myself “how am I going to get up there” I hadn’t taken two steps up the hill when I realized my legs were about to shut down on me. It took me forever to get up that first hill. I was taking the tiniest steps youve ever seen and I couldn’t do any more because my Heart Rate was redlined. And I couldn’t get it back down. I started thinking to myself “How am I going to finish this race” ” I don’t know if I can last that long” I was having abdominal cramps up under my ribcage, I was sick to my stomach, I was dizzy and I was HOT. And my legs were really tying up. Its hard to really explain just how bad it was.
I was about half way up that first big hill when Kim aka “Kimzilla” aka “Dirtnap” ran up along side and checked on my condition before jogging up the hill and off into the wild blue younder. The next time I’d see her she’d be done, cooled down and in her casual clothes LOL.
At about half way I’d stop at an aid station and I took Ice water and poured it all over myself. That made me feel better but I still could just barely put one foot in front of the other. I just kept drinking and hoping. Everyone that passed was so supportive so that was cool and I started noticing others having similar problems. Everytime Id finally get to the top of a climb Id think that was it but then in the distance Id see another climb and another and another. Finally I was on the final downhill to the finish. I knew now that if I had to crawl on my belly I was going to make it. I ran the last 100′ just because everyone was clapping. I got to the finish and Bob M was there saying Great job. And I’m like “youve got to be kidding” that was a TRAIN WRECK. That run errr walk took me 1 hr 14 min at an average pace of 26:34. Pretty funny huh? But hey I finished.

I’d been done a short while and was standing there talkin’ with Kim when Tracy made it in. I don’t know how she did it as her race was so long and she’d been out there in that 100 degree Sun for over 4 hours. But she looked remarkably good. Turns out it was just because she was glad to be done. She’d start feeling a bit puny herself in short order. I would have bowed down in front of her as I respected her effort that much but if I’d gotten down I’d have never gotten back up.
Some Trotter Xterra comments: ( I’ll keep posting these as they come in)

As far as the whole X-Terra experience, I really enjoyed it. Glad that you guys talked me into it…I take back every unkind word I said before the race J. I was very nervous and worried about the course, especially after I was shown the first hill and heard that people held their quads on the way up…quite intimidating. The rising temperature didn’t help with the worry factor either. The course was challenging, especially the narrow downhills with drop off cliffs and rocks in the middle of the pathways but all in all it was a great experience and nice change of pace from road running. I would recommend the X-Terra’s for a fun family experience, something for everyone
Ingy:
Even though I was a wuss and only ran the 5k, it was all I wanted that day. I felt like I was cooking from the inside out!!!
Monica:
I ran the X-terra 5K. Fellow Trotters had warned of the hilly course and they weren’t kidding. The first hill, which, when viewed from the starting line, looked almost vertical, set the tone for the race. It was an ass-kicker. Those who tried to charge those hills were walking midway up. On top of that, it seemed like each time we climbed a hill and plateaued, there was another one waiting. I just kept trudging along—not even sure if you can call my method of getting up the hills running—and dreaming of the next water station. Which brings up one pet peeve of this race. Not enough water stations. Granted, I only ran the 5K, but it was so scorching hot, I do wish they would have added a couple more stations. Que Sera…. It was over relatively fast and I survived without falling. Ironically, on a long run with Taimi the next day, I acquired a nasty road rash by tripping over a sandbag on a dirt path near my house. I am wearing my wounds with pride!

X TERRA long course: Dead or Alive?? I was alive on the course but so dead by 10 minutes after my 4:33 finish that I didn’t walk the 200 ft back to where Doug and Kim were hanging out for fear of collapse. I just set there trying to figure out if I should add to the roughly 1.5 gallons of cytomax (extra strong), quart of gatoraid (extra strength) and quart of water I drank during the race via mouth or via IV. Mouth to mouth with a cup ended up working, followed by non stop orange slices and if there’s an orange shortage this year, it’s because I ate them all.
People finished both short and long course in one of two states: Either on the alive side of dead or on the dead side of alive and if you don’t see much distinction in those designations, trust me, there wasn’t.
We long course (19.5 mile) racers did the hard part of the short course twice and by the time I headed into the second loop at my slow compared to most rider’s speed, the entire loop was 3 parts blood and 2000 parts swet mixed into every block of scorched sand path. I swear it was so hot vultures circling the riders melted right out of the sky and any snake daring to cross the path turned petrified on the spot. My bike split was a not fast 2.47 but it was fast enough to make me happy and at least I didn’t join in taking flying lessons. I finished the bike feeling good and not hot thanx to all I drank combined with my insane habit of training at noon on a regular basis making me more immune to heat than most.
I did the 5.5 plod in just shy of 64 minutes and felt the combined effects of the effort for several miles before my second wind kicked in.
After words, my legs felt about as they do on completion of a comfortably paced marathon and my upper body (shoulders and arms) felt as if they’d done a marathon of their own. Can you say upper body “Wipe Out!”
Unlike road bike tri’s, mt bike tri’s require constant focus and intense concentration on the course to make it thru in one piece so a lot of mental fatigue takes place.
If anyone finds out where Doug, Kim, (Dan?) or I left 2/3rds of each of our brain cells, please mail them to us… just make sure you send the right cells to the right person since i don’t think I want Doug’s missing brain cells in my body!
Steve
The wet bandana was nice; like having a ice cube to suck on in hell! Yes, it was hot and steep, but a lot of fun and I look forward to next year. My friend Troy did the 21K and really enjoyed it, but reported that the six water stops were all near the start and finish, so he was lucky he carried a water bottle.

Well gang the Xterra weekend is FINALLY here, just a few hours away. Tomorrow its all the runs and some clinics at Vail Lake and on Sunday its the two Triathlons. Tomorrow we have Ingy running in the 5k off road race and Im pretty sure Taimi is going to run the 10k. Linda D is going to run the 21k. There may be more trotters running, Im not sure. I have heard that a few trotters will be on hand to cheer the others on. I’ll be there with my EZup and Ingy says we’ll have some gatorade and water on Ice. There is also a dog obstacle course competition on Saturday. On Sunday its Kim and I racing in the Sport Triathlon and Tracy E in the Championship race. Im pretty sure Dan is also racing but not sure which race. I think there is also a Duathlon. So if you want to work on your skin cancer or try for a case of sunstroke, slather on some SPF 4000 and put on a big hat and get your rear in gear and come on out.

Just got this message from Dan about his race. He’s apparently a man of few words. Not like someone else we all know
Water was brown & choppy but at least it wasn’t too cold. It was a road tri.
Swimming is my weakest but I passed about 10 people on the bike & about 5 people on the
run -Dan D
Sitting here going over the race results from the Big Rock Triathlons held this past Saturday at Lake Perris. I see 4 names I recognize but only one Trotter. Dan Detienne competed in the Sprint distance race and finished in 4th O/A, 4th Male. Not to shabby. Another friend of the club Brigid Freyne finished in 9th O/A and 3rd Female.
In the Olympic distance race club friends Matt Hylton finished in 11th O/A and Polly Crawford finished in 22nd 0/A , 2nd woman.
Of all the tee shirts Ive ever gotten at a race the BIG ROCK was the best design. That said it was some of the funkiest water I ever swam in. I’ll have to ask these athletes if its gotten any better.

I just recieved a call from Ingy. He tells me that he had the best turnout ever for the Monday Night Speedwork session…9 people! thats about 2x as many as usual. Kim P, Polly, Kim and Glen, Amber, Ingy, Beth and her Husband, and 2 new people Meg and Brian.
Also forgot to mention the other day that at our DVL bike ride Linda Dreese showed up sporting a brand spankin’ new Gary Fisher MTB. I’ll try and get a pic of her and her new toy to share with you guys.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY ![]()
***************************************************************************
Mothers Day Diamond Valley Lake MTB Ride
Well we had another great MTB outing today at DVL. I wasn’t expecting many to show, being Mothers Day and all. In fact I was sure the day would be a bust. But it wasn’t long before our little ensemble turned into our largest ride yet. There were 10 of us. And we were missing a couple of our regulars.
If I had to call these DVL rides something, Id call them a rolling party on wheels. If we’d just bring food it would be a party. Much like a party where you yak it up with one person for awhile and then with someone else. Well, thats exactly how these rides go. Just a great chance to visit and get a lil’ exercise at the same time. I want to thank Ingy, Iain, Bob M and Tracy E, Taimi, Linda D, Monica an her husband and son Mark and Ryan for making it another memorable day.

TV ALERT: Today at various times the Country Music Marathon is being televised. I have Direct TV and for me it is on various channels in the 600 range. Check your local listings…sorry for the late notice.
Tomorrows bike ride: Most of you know the drill, but for anyone that may be coming who is new, you need to bring a water bottle, sunblock/chapstick if you want. The weather forecast is for about 60-65 degrees at our 8:30 start and it should warm to the low 70s by the time we’re done. That means it might not be a bad idea to bring a sweat shirt or a windbreaker. You can make a last minute decision at your car before we leave. Parking at the lake is $7 per car, so carpooling is always nice if you can find someone. There is a store at the lake for anything you might need Dont forget gloves if you dont want callouses. And you can’t have Helmet head if you dont wear a helmet. That said if your all about the doo’ you can get by without one. See you’s guys in the morning

I missed a new Trotter in last months Temecula Triathlon report. But not just any Trotter, no, it happened to be the “fastest” Trotter. Id reported that Eric had smoked the rest of us by like 15 minutes or so. Well it turns out that Eric also got beaten. New Trotter Dan Detienne was 1 minute and 18 seconds ahead of Eric. Dan ran a 1:05:59 race. Congrats Dan!
Run thru the Vineyards 5 and 10 k races

Last Saturday 5/3/08 we went and raced the Vineyard run. By “we” I mean the 14 Trotters that showed for the race.
A short discription of the 5k course: All dirt, except a couple hundred feet of asphalt at the end.
The race starts along side Rancho Calif road and immediatley youre going uphill. The footing is pretty good for the first half mile or so. Id guess that first hill to be about a 1/4 mile long, then it swept to the right and it was a nice gentle downhill. Near the bottom it started to get soft and sandy. Then we hung a right turn an ran along side a small ditch on some soft off camber stuff for maybe a 1/3 mile. Then a sharp U-turn in front of my fans and back along side the ditch on the opposite side. Here they had some sort of spongy ground cover that was like running on rubber springs. Maybe a 1/10th mile of this and then back to fairly good hard pack.
We ran over to Anza road and hung a left and it was then that the sand got deep and soft. And to add to that we were going up hill. Its a hill that just keeps getting steeper as you go up it. When you “finally” get to what you think is the top and hang another left turn you find that your still not at the top, argh!. A few more turns and “finally” your at the top. A short jaunt across some fairly level stuff and its back down another fast downhill. At the bottom we got back on a decent dirt road and by that point we could both see and smell the barn. One of the great things about this course is that within a 1/10th mile of the finish there is one last hill to take out of your legs whatever you thought you had left
Once you crest that hill you can see the only asphalt on the course. It was then that you could hear the cheering throngs of people hollaring GO DOUGIE GO DOUGIE. Well it sounded like that to me
. It really did help to hear people encouraging you at the very moment you needed it most. So how did we all do you ask? Well………..
Eric the “Jester” Clifton ran both races and did really well in both. He was 17th OA in the 5k, took 2nd of 24 in his AG and laid down a 19:55 on a pretty tough, soft sand course.
Following Eric across the tape (albiet a teenie ways back)
Whoops late addition, Id forgot Big Mo’ (maurice) 22:50 2/10
Kimi P 25:00 4/27
Victor 25:37 5/13
Ingy 26:11 3/10
dougie 30:02 4/11
In the 10K it was once again The “Jester” at the pointy end of the field, this time in 11th OA, 42:20 and 1/10
Close on his heals just :18 seconds back was The Taiminator 14th OA 42:38 and 2/19.
Just a few deep breaths behind her was Dan D 16th OA 43:24 and 3/17
Then it was our youngest member Amber in 44th OA 51:16 and 1/4
Then came the Jane and Barb show, these two athletes came down that last dirt hill flyin’. Jane leading and Barb close enough to be Janes shadow. Barb pushed as hard as she could and left nothing on the course but Jane had “just” enough left in the tank to hold off her friend. It reminded me of the race Ingy an I had at Ramona awhile back. Just inches apart at the finish. That was my favorite part of the day, watching my two friends race so damn hard. The Dynamic Duo went 1 – 2 in their AG 51:49 to a 51:50. They were 50th and 51st OA and there were 7 total in their AG.
The next runner across the line behind Jane and Barb was Tino just a smidge back. 52nd OA 52:10 5/14 AG.
Next up was Linda D. 61st OA 54:17 and 4/19.
Jen Coyle had a bad day. Not sure what happened but she had some sort of engine malfunction while out on the course and had to pull out of the race with a DNF.
Sorry I dont have any pics to share, other than the Google photo’s you see. I dont suppose anyone has an older Digital camera sitting in a drawer collecting dust?
And in closing, ya know how most of us have enough t-shirts to clothe half of the Third World? Well being the Macho Guy I am (what do you mean you hadnt noticed?) whenever I go to a race that has a shirt with lots of pink or purple, pictures of flowers, puppie dogs, kittens or Grapes on it, I ask for a medium and take it home for my 81 year old Mom and make lots of Brownie points. She didnt raise a fool.
CLUB BBQ & POOL PARTY

Ahh yes the Club BBQ and pool party. Even better than the last one. I didnt take a head count but Id guess there were 20 or so Trotters and spouses. Not much to report though. No one got drunk, at least not enough to dance on any tables, sigh, and I was so looking forward to that, seriously
. We did have beautiful weather and we all sat around bench racing and eating, talking and eating. Did I mention eating? I think for the next party we need to get together and come up with a list of whos bringing what. We had enough food to feed ourselves and the rest of the club. And once again, sorry no pics.
Id like to thank everyone that attended, and Id especially like to thank both Ryan and Cristina who hosted the party.
