Seriously, Sandra and Tracy went to a Dog Adoption affair held at the Wilson Winery on Sunday. Read about it in the “Comments” section on the left side of the page. The post from Tracy. #########################################

This past Saturday was the Camp Pendleton International Distance Triathon
It appears that 5 Trotter Women and One Trotter Man competed.
3 of the 4 Tri chicks ran the race, Leslie, Karrie, and Darcy. As did Kim P and Brigid.
I’ve heard mini race reports from Kim, Brigid and Darcy. Kim was over the moon about her finish, I think she was 11 minutes under her 07′ time. She had her best swim ever. And she was faster in her run and bike too.
Brigid said the cooler weather made the race easier especially on the run. I think she related the runs of years past to the Battan Death March. And she too was “very” happy with her performance, and who wouldn’t be if you’d finished 10th (maybe 9th pending final results) place Woman in a field of 164.
Darcy wrote and said something to the effect of “I need to train more”
Yes Darcy I feel your pain and I can definately relate. Kudos to you for diggin’ deep and fighting on thru.
I haven’t heard from the rest but scanning the results it looks like Karrie had a Great Swim, Leslie had a solid race especially her Bike split. And Brad Burt was on his “A” game as he finished 4th in an AG of 44 competitors. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
At the same time of day in another zip code further North there were maybe 14-16 Trotters who showed up for the largest ever Trotter gathering at the Santa Rosa Plateau.
I’d messed up on the Newsletter and put the starting time at 7AM. But somehow the word got out to most and those that showed had a great time. We were greated by the early morning fog. Myself, Im just a 3x a week 3 miler. But I thought I could maybe put in an easy 5 if I was careful but I’d been at the Plateau the day before and had MTB’d 21 miles so my legs were pretty much toast. I took off just ahead of the group a few minutes so I could get up the trail and try to get a group running pic and maybe a video. Here is a picture of most of the group and my first attempt at a short video clip so bear with me as I’m no Franis Ford Coppala…not yet
In the clip I missed Glen and Dan but you can probably make out the rest. There is sound also. Looking at the photo I see Glen and Kim, Boston Barb, Big Mo, Victor L, Dan the Man, Hidden just behind Dan is Bryan Allen, his daughter (sorry I’m bad with names) and his wife Christine, then after the gap is a new guy, I think Bob said a retired Preacher? who was in town looking for a run, then new trotters Victor Flores and his wife Dina, then a young man I don’t know and Ingy running caboose. This photo was taken right at the trail head. Our Trotter Website always chops off the right side of all my pics or you’d be able to see the trail head:

And here is my first video attempt, click on the link and it should take you to the video:
Dan was way cool in the way he managed our group. Some were out for longer runs than others but he managed to keep the group together like an old Mother Goose. (bet that analogy doesn’t go over well LOL) but it was true. Most of the group could hang together but a few of us would drift behind. So every 2 miles or so Dan would stop the group and allow us to catch up. That was very cool Dan. At the first stop at around 2 miles a woman came running up from the opposite direction. She was apparently out there looking for us but we’d taken off just before she got there. Her finding us was a stroke of luck. Never did get her name but she was a good runner and was right there with the other faster runners. If the mystery runner reads this then please email me at dgstephens26.2@netzero.com so I can talk you into joining
We’d love to have you.
Well the run carried us to the top of a ridge where we picked up some single track. Some technical single track at that. I love that stuff. But still my legs were getting hammered and I was thinking about heading back at the next opportunity when I saw “IT” It was a sign that said “Visitor Center .6 miles. Damn. I know the visitor center is nowheres near where my truck is parked in fact it’s miles away. Well we all met up again at the Visitors center and after a break most took off. I think a few, Dan and some others would go for an even longer run. Myself, I stayed back with the Allens and the Flores and we’d wait another 10 minutes or so before setting off on the way back. Probably a good thing I was there as I was the only one that knew my way back from there.
I think a few of the new members wondered a few times about the reason for running off road and if it was “for” them. I guess it’s not for everybody but everybody can benefit from it. And we only do it one Saturday a month. We have plenty of asphalt and concrete for those that want it too.
And speaking of Dirt. Brigid was telling me that she does her hill repeats on Pauba hill. Yeah I know that’s some sick training. She was wondering about some dirt or grass hills for repeats. I think the only grass hills around here are on golf courses and I’d bet they’d frown on us using them. But I was thinking, I know, scary thought, ………short of coming out to where I live, how about the hills at Meadow View? Are not a few of those hills good for repeats? Especially the ones on the South/East side? Anyway food for thought.
I went out again on Sunday Morning for a Road Bike Ride. I’m still trying to come up with about a 25 mile safe (ish) loop for the bikers in the club. I’ve got a few routes in progress. If anyone wants to get up real early and go out with me then I’d love the company. Other wise just sleep in.
Well, that’s all I’ve got….doug out. Oh yeah, Saturdays off road 4 -5 miler turned into a 7.5

Speaking of Mt Baldy’s Run to the Top. Has anyone in the club ever done this race? It looks to be twice as long and more than twice as tuff as the Tram Road Challenge. I’d like to hear a first hand account. The race by the way is coming up on 9/1/08

Just got this from Eric. You can compare the run times to the hike times I posted for Ingy and myself and you can see just how fast this group was – dougie
As for the sat run dan and i ran to what i call the top which is the intersection sign for dripping springs and palomar magee trail. it was pretty overgrown from overarching foliage near the top but not awfully bad tho i lost my hat twice to “grabby” branches. dan and i summitted in 83:51 run time (i stopped my watch when we stopped to talk to you guys and dan had to empty his shoes a couple of times). we hung out at the top a few minutes and then descended in 66:49 for a total of 2:30:40.
noni, linda and victor headed up and victor’s calf was bothering him so he turned around at 3 miles, i don’t know what his times were but i am guessing his time at 3 was the same as noni’s which was 40:25. noni and linda continued on to do 5 miles up and back. they hit the 5 mile mark in 73:00 and came down in 52:43 for a 2:05:43 total.
a good time was had by all.
btw- after looking on the sites i think the rattlesnake we saw was a speckled rattlesnake.
glad you enjoyed it, it is a great course for ultra trail runners and good prep for those interested in the run up mt. baldy.
harpy tails,
jester

Agua Tibia Mountain
Today I got up at the crack of still dark, grabbed a bowl of cereal, sat down in front of the PC, checked my fan club emails, got dressed, grabbed my 70 ounces of frozen Gatorade, my Garmin, a wide brimmed hat and I was out the door headed to the Dripping Springs Campground to meet Ingy at 0630 hours. Scheww, how’s that for a run on sentence? I’d no sooner arrived than I saw the Ingymobile pulling in behind me. A few minutes later and we were walking through the campground headed for the Trail Head.

Eric, Noni, Dan, Victor and Linda would all be showing up at 0800 hours. They all planned on running up Agua Tibia Mtn. Bob and I had less lofty goals and instead planned on hiking up but only 5 miles or so. We knew that even with an hour and a half head start that the Wunderkids would catch us no problemo. It wasn’t a matter of if, it was when? The weather at 0630 was just about perfect. We got started up the trail and we immediately started gaining altitude. It wasn’t long and we had views like these:

We were at about mile 4.5 when Bob asked “did you hear that?” “I hear them coming” well ol’ radar ears was spot on because just a few moments later we could see two runners across a valley from us serpentining (is that a word?) their way up the mountain. Bob hollared and Eric spotted us. We’d get to about 4.95 miles when Eric an Dan caught up with us. Up to that point we’d seen a couple of horney toads (no, one of them wasn’t me) and a couple of stripped black racers. While the four of us were standing there Eric shouted “Doug its a Viper, get over here” He’d found a big Rattlesnake in the middle of the trail but by the time I got there it was crawling off into the bushes and I couldn’t get a good picture.
At that point I think it was another 2 miles to the top and Eric and Dan took off. Bob and I decided that 5 miles up was enough for this day and we started the other 5 miles down (for anyone interested it took Ingy and I about 2.5 hours to get up 5 miles at a moderate pace. It took us 2 hours to descend). We were just about a mile into our descent when Ingy once again heard voices only this time he said ” I think their female” He put his ear to the ground and said “yes, two females, young, light on their feet, brunettes and I think that they only had water and a power bar for breakfast”. Well just a few minutes later and we spotted Noni and Linda running up the trail like a couple of young deer. Not even breathing hard. We stopped for a few minutes to visit. Then they told us that Victor had turned around at about 3 miles or so as he had a knee problem (I think) and that he’d headed back.

The ladies would continue on up to the 5 mile mark or there abouts and then turn around and head back down. We tried to do the math to figure where they all would catch us again and figured it would be near the bottom. We couldn’t have been more wrong. I think we’d gone about 2 miles when we heard, no make that Ingy heard ( I must be going deaf) the women coming down the trail ….fast. I barely had time to snap a picture:

Right behind them came this sight. “Duuude, I think I’m having an 60’s flashback, oooh look at all the colors man” What was it? A two legged day glow poster from the local head shop? Nope it was Eric in a skirt.

And close on his heals was a “Skirt Chasing” Dan

I was sort of surprised to find that they were all still waiting at the parking area when Ingy and I rolled in. Mabye they were just concerned about the ol’ pharts.
Thanks gang. I had a Great time and I want to go back and go to the top as soon as fall and cooler weather gets here. Also had something weird happen today. I was walking down the mountain and I became aware of my hands and that I couldn’t make a fist. My fingers were so swollen I couldn’t close my hands. I mentioned it to Ingy and he had the same problem. Im guessing it has to do with the fact that ones arms hang more down when walking than running and that all the swinging acts like a pendulum and forces the blood to the fingers. Simply holding our hands above our heads and we could feel the blood leaving them. Like I said….weird.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA

Today Monica (Lil’ Mo) made the journey down to Coronado Island in San Diego to run a 5k there. She did really well finishing 1st in her AG out of 82. 9th woman OA.
Little Mo tells me she’s trying real hard to break the 20 minute barrier but it remains just out of reach. I think she might have made it today but for the course. I ran this race last year and its not a PR course. Too many people, too many turns, it starts and ends with a 50 yard or more dash on grass and has lots of hard concrete boardwalk.
It’s a fun race but not a fast one.

NEXT WEDNESDAY 7/9/08
The evening run is going to be changed from the RedHawk loop to one run from the Paloma Del Sol park. It’s just shy of 5 miles. The run will commence about 6:30 PM.
Paloma Del Sol park is located on De Portola just East of Margarita. (right behind the Home Depot)

Last nights club meeting had 14 Trotters in attendance. We discussed looking for a location for a club picnic/party later this Summer. Sandra and Boston Barb both volunteered to look into it. Thanks a bunch Ladies. I suggested that perhaps Lake Skinner might be a decent location. But PLEASE if anyone has any suggestions then lets hear them. Don’t be shy. Myself, I’d love a location where we could swim (frolic
In the water but that’s a tall order. And we do need to remain local
