IS THERE AN IRONMAN OUT THERE???  IF IT’s YOU, tell us all how much fun it was (or wasn’t)! If it wasn’t you but you want to rat him out, let beakbytes@verizon.net know  :)

ANYBODY INTERESTED IN A GROUP SESSION ON “THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE”, taught by Christie Johnson, should contact Ingy or me at beakbytes@verizon.net.  To refresh your minds, this is the person who spoke to us last Pizza night…a brief description of this technique is below under club meeting notes. If enough people are interested, Ingy will check on group rates/set it up.

     S O M A  H A L F  I R O N  TRI

Kim P. continued her Summer long trend of racing just about every weekend  by heading out to Tempe AZ where she got to enjoy (?) a second trend that seems to be following her around:  Racing in the 90’s. As in degrees. The listed high was 91 with a nice bright sun shining it’s intense rays down on top the triathletes.  I have to wonder, does she put sunblock on her bike or has it turned two shades darker than it’s original color??  Her total time was 5:34:01 which means she was indeed racing under the noon day sun. Just kind of  eye balling the results, looks to me like about 200 females did this race and she and her sun tanned bike beat some where between half and 2/3rds of the gals. She took 9th of 29 in her age

splits:   Swim 52:13 which was just fast enough to let her work on her tan while making sure her corp temp. was as low as possible so she could excel at the other parts of the tri.

Bike: 2:37  That was fast enough that the sun rays may not have been able to catch up with her and she passed all those other girls that didn’t work on lowering their body temps during the swim as effectively as she did.  She had the 5th fastest bike time in her age group.

Run:  1:59:23  and can track shoes melt under these conditions? She took 9th in her age group in the run.

Redlands Bulldog Triathlon

Bullie presents victory wreath to Brigid, who took first overall female.  Happily, the glade air freshener hidden in his flews decreased the scent of his breath enough to not knock her over when he gave her a congratulatory kiss.

Four Trotters spent Sunday enjoying this inaugural sprint distance tri, held on the Univ. of Redlands campus.  No word as to whether the Bulldog mascot was present as a participant or as a cheer leader, but with the places the Trotter’s took listed below, I have no doubt that all four of them out ran, out biked and probably even out dog paddled any bulldogs that showed up on the course.

Dan Detienne 1/33   6/335    55:20

Brigid Freyne 1/20  22/335  57:53 and 1st Woman O/A

Tino Soria    11/25  121/335  1:09:20

Doug Stephens 6/14  137/335 1:10:16

Beautiful weather, beautiful campus, nice race. Goody bags sucked, T-shirt was ok if you like Bulldogs ;) Had a great time. dg

KIM P.  and a slew of other triathletes had the NOT fun bike ride of the season doing the Pumpkin man oly distance triathlon last Sunday.  One peek at the peak filled bike course profile was all it took for Kim to wave goodby to her tri bike and load up her road bike instead. Good thing she did because the bike course squashed the wind out of everyone’s lungs and left muscles’ pureed.   Many of the bikers averaged only 9 to 12 MPH but we all know Kim isn’t average and she pulled off a 15.7 MPH bike average.  This race was a national championship with very stiff competition coming from many states.  Kim pulled off 8 of 18 in her age group. I hope she at least got to eat pumpkin pie for her efforts!

Splits:  swim: 35.27     bike: 1:35:06    Run:  49:56  (8:03 pace) total: 3:06:23

C H I C A G O the Windy City   M A R A T H O N

CONGRATULATIONS to TRACEY S. for finishing her first Mary!!!  She got through alive to see another day in 5:45 and some seconds, one of 33,000 participants.  Tracey, we’d love to hear your comments  about the big event…

WOW!!! ASK AND WE ALL RECEIVE!!!  I always love hearing the reactions from people who do their first ‘biggie’ whether it’s a mary or a tri or a hike or a whatever -maybe it’s because it takes all of us back to ‘our first’ and we can so identify with the hardship (read that pain?) of the event and the happy tears on completion.  Well, I confess to having happy tears on completing marathons…maybe not so much the male club members….(any of you macho males want to confess to having tears on finishing a major event??)

HERE’s TRACEY’S INPUT:

It was quite an experience; 45,000 registered, 33,000 showed up, and 31,400 finished. The crowd was amazing along the entire course. There were professional cheerleaders, mariachi bands, Korean drummers, and live bands. As a Chicago native, I love this city! But…Chicago was H-O-T again this year.

The race started at 8 a.m., by mile 19 the race organizers raised the alert level to Extreme and encouraged everyone to just walk it in. I struggled through miles 17 – 23, but was able to pick it up again to the end. (editor’s note:  Apparently no one told Tracey that the last 3 miles and especially the last .1 are the hardest!!)

The race support was exceptional. The host hotel where we stayed, the Chicago Hilton, was very festive and overflowing with excited fellow runners. The Health Expo at McCormick Place was the biggest I’ve attended. I even met Deena Kastor and she signed a poster for me.

Will I run another Mary?

…only if it doesn’t take me 20,745 seconds to finish! (editor’s note:  But I bet those were some of the most full filling 20,745 seconds of your life : )

I am happy that I could finish, though. Thanks to my always positive training partners: Nancy, Sandy, and Daria. You girls rock!

   T R O T T E R ‘ S  P I C N I C

While some Trotter’s prepped their bodies for the Long Beach Mary-i-thon and half, other’s of us prepped our stomachs for Halloween via goodies brought to the Trotter’s picnic potluck on Saturday.  A baker’s dozen of us showed up to lounge about, chat up, and chow down in the perfect weather.

At Right, Doug hid behind Maurice, possibly embarrassed at using a chaise lounge with legs so short I think it was stolen from a dachshund family.

Ingy’s wife Vicky made a cameo appearance and revealed Ingy’s secret to  successful training:  Every time they’re on a road trip and he says he’s “go’in out for just a few miles”  he covers twice the stated distance and,  ”Honey, don’t give me that ‘karp’ about you had to keep runnin’ cause you saw this dime 2 miles ahead glintin’ in the sun…. AGAIN.”

Seems Vicky and Dina may have something in common with their hubby’s because apparently Victor says the same thing to Dina except when he says it, he’s wearing swim fins and next thing Dina knows, he’s snorkelin’ half way to Timbuktu and the Great Whites are following him, betting fish fins on how far out he’ll go. SWIM, VICTOR, SWIM!!!! (Am I where yet?)

Kim K. doesn’t have that problem with Glen, but she noted that even though she’s the one born with a non sense of direction, during their trip to Yellowstone, it was she and not dearest Glen who successfully bee lined full speed back to their car when a bear lumbered in their direction.  Go KIM GO!!

################################

LONGGGG BEACH MARATHON and HALF

Several Trotters sprinted rather than trotted their way through these two races which brings me to the non quote of the day:

Something Taimi as a little girl NEVER called out to anyone, anywhere:  ”Wait for meeeee!”

TAIMI:  Full Mary -3:11:38, making her 81 of 2,604 finishers.  40% of those runners were female, 60% were men.  Taimi placed 7th of about 1,065 females, beat 95% of all males, 99% of the entire field, and ended up metaling in her age. I hope she had the decency to be tired at the end.

RICHARD O. paced just behind Taimi with his 3:15:05.

KIM P. Competed against about 7,538 runners in the half mary in a field that was 59% female and 41% male. Guess we know what every female that lives in Southern CA and runs was doing Sunday. Her time of 1:42:21 placed her 414th overall, ahead of 89% of the males. She was 68th of  4,491 females and took 7th of the 649 gals in her age group.   Kim can probably hardly wait for her birthday because shortly she gets to jump age groups and FINALLY be at the young end of the scale instead of the old end.  Look out 45 to 49 yr old females because when she does that, she’s going to be seeing lots of metal added to her collection from these big races.  Between her and Taimi, lets hope the weight doesn’t set off some sort of earth quake!

INGY’s WIFE VICKY’s TRAINING TIP FOR  SUCCESSFULLY BEATING OTHERS IN A MARATHON:  Before the marathon, don’t train to run fast.  Instead, train to throw rocks accurately.  Come race day, walk the course and eliminate the competition via accurately thrown rocks.

CLUB MEETING in (NOT) brief:

Trotters voted to eliminate PDS as start local for Sat. runs.  Runs will now start from Farmers’ Market or Santa Rosa Plateau as listed on calendar.  Reason:  Runners are less likely to end up as a hood ornament on FM market route, route is easy to expand to the ungodly distances some Trotters call ‘fun’, route is ‘nicer’. Twice a year, club  runs will start at Dripping Springs.  Track work outs will continue for now but Ingy is considering dropping them.

Get your points to Beth.  Repeat that twice or as often as needed if you’re over 50 so you remember to do so.

We’re looking at putting a new club logo on new club shirts in January. Activate your imaginations, submit ideas to Ingy. If you don’t, Ingy may choose to put 15 x 15 inch photo of himself on the shirts.  Do you want that??

Remember the 11 Oct 11:30 AM picnic pot luck.   Part two of activate your imagination: Bring something along with your own drink.   Here is what people have signed up to bring…Potato salad, fruit salad, something identified as ‘salad’ (What a healthy group we are!), one dessert, one ‘chips/salsa’ and the master Chef Ingy will spend the day in the kitchen making scrumptious paper plate and plastic utensils (probably using ingredients from China). So looks to me like we could use more desserts (or is that just me??) and more junk food snack-o stuff.  Due to no refrigeration, if you want meat product, suggest you just bring it for yourself. There’s usually a dead ‘possum hangin’ out on Margarita lookin’ like it needs a plate.

Ingy invited  GUEST SPEAKER Christie Johnson. She gave us an over view on what’s termed “The Alexander Technique”.  This technique emphasizes a relaxed and proper body form to improve the body’s ability to function in many disciplines and to lesson the likelihood of injury.  Instead of fighting against your body, you’re working with it.  Information on this technique is available on line, through books, and through Christie’s classes for both groups and one on one. (WWW.FormFunctionFlow.com) or 951-312-2188.

Doug:    ”What do ya mean I left an oil slick?? It’s butter flavored ‘Pam’, works twice as well as body glide for half the price.”

KIM P., DOUG and I whipped through the Mission Bay sprint distance tri on Sunday.  It’s the sort of race that’s good enough to draw repeat offenders, which Doug and Kim both qualified as.

WHAT makes this tri so good?  Three things:  Unique history, fabulous organization and drop dead perfect  course. It’s the tri for every level of triathlete, beginner to advanced.

It’s history is unique.  The Mission bay tri is the birth place of tri’s.  In  1974, 4 years before ironman Hawaii came about, a runner talked to fellow members of the San Diego track club about the idea of a race combining swimming with running.  The idea went over well then almost crashed when a 3rd person was insistent about tossing a bike ride into the mix.  Not only did the originator of the idea not bike, he didn’t even own a bike.

Eventually, a course was devised that involved about 6 miles of running split into several segments, 600 meters of swimming divided into two segments with 5 miles of biking sandwiched in the middle more or less.  The originator felt that anything involving swimming and a beach shouldn’t involve over use of shoes….thus, get this…2 miles of the first tri were supposed to be run bare- AUCH- foot on grass and sand.  Oh Joy.  That’s why they chose Mission Bay with it’s lovely Fiesta Island as a race local.  Plenty of foot friendly sand and grass and wasn’t that before dog owner’s used potty pick up bags?.

That first tri, which didn’t even have the designation ’triathlon’ since up til then the word didn’t exist, was held on a wed evening.  It turned into a run, bike, swim, run, swim and cost $1. each (Don’t we all wish??).  46 or so people did it.

As the initiator/race director/participant of the race sped around mission bay doing the race he devised on his brand new high tech 10 speed bike, he lapped a female who was racing on a beach cruiser bike, a bike that was one step slower than the 3 speeds most other racers were using.  He suddenly realized darkness was going to hit while she and the other slower folks were doing that last 250 meter bay swim segment. Happily, those who finished early were able to light up the second swim for the not- so –fast   using car head lights.    Did you read that Kim and Barb  and Taimi….see it could be worse, you could be swimming at night and did I just hear all 3 of you say, “ over my dead body??”

One other bit of humor in this first tri….when the fellow who thought this then crazy idea up switched from his bike to the run, he of course got hit with that delightful (?) wobbly leg syndrome that’s near and dear to the heart of all triathletes.  Evidently the pain could be seen on his face because one of his friends who was watching yelled to him, “Remember, this was your idea!!”

Subsequently this first mission bay race was trimmed into  today’s swim/bike/run, Scott Tinley raced in it, the Hawaiian ironman was born, and Scott upped his race distance from Mission Bay to eventually win 2 Hawaii irons.

ORGANIZATION:  Those who organize this race deserve an award for their extreme efficiency in processing the 1,500 participants.  Parking is easy, the transition area has designated racks for each of the wave starts so everyone in each wave has to enter and leave the T. from about the same distance.  Waves pop into the water at 5 minute or so intervals, timed perfectly to keep jam ups from occurring during the bike.  Volunteers are every where you need them and in between as well.

The COURSE:  USER FRIENDLY!!  This is what I’d call the perfect sprint tri for those in the club ready to take the plunge from the reverse pool tri’s to the  conventional form of sprint tri.

The bay swim is dead calm and one could actually see all the buoy’s, a rarity in any tri.  No sun shine blinding one, no waves obscuring line of sight. And get this:  NO SHARKS!!

The bike and run were both flat except for crossing a ‘Florida style’ hill aka a bridge. Plenty of park scenery and greenery kept your eyes entertained except maybe not Kim’s because at the speed she went I’m not sure she had time to see any scenery.  So Doug and I enjoyed it for her.

The icing on the race cake:  Perfect weather:  Sun popped out to ‘watch’ us swim and make sure our wet bodies didn’t get cold on the bike, but kept itself in check enough that the temp. during the run remained pleasant.

MACH 3 …I think she passed the space shuttle here abouts.

    RACE RESULTS:

KIM P:  9 of 76 in age,  298 over all of about 1,462

 500  Swim:  11: 18   T-1:  2:35    10. Plus Mile* BIKE:  29:29 which = speed of light   T-2:  1:40

5K RUN:  23:35   total time:  1:08:37 (Kim’s bike time beat two of 3 of the ‘elite’ females times)

DOUG:  22 of 37 in age, 766 over all,

SWIM:  11:26    T-1:  3:30   BIKE: 31:18    T-2  2:12   RUN:  30:02   TOTAL:  1:18:28

TRACY:  3 of 25 in age, 416 over all

SWIM:  9:50  T-1:  2:42  BIKE:  33:37  T-2:  1:43    RUN:  23:26       TOTAL: 1:11:26

NOTE * re bike:  Bike was listed as 15 K but Doug’s Garmin showed 10.6

  LA Triathlon at BONELLI Park:

BRIGID aced this oly distance tri, placing FIRST OVERALL female. It’s the first time she’s scooped up a first over all place and that should be enough to keep her smiling for the rest of the year!!  She tried to be humble and tell me it was “just a small triathlon….you know, just like 500 or so total people in it”.  After I quit laughing, I told her ’small’ was like 60 total participants : )… She wasn’t sure how many females were present but guessed about 60.  Her bike and run splits killed the competition and her swim time was about the 6th fastest she thought.  Not exactly shabby!

BOOT CAMP CHALLENGE:

“NEED A BOOST OVER THAT BARRIER??”

OK Trotters….Like TINO for one…I know a bunch of you did this because when I was going to have our picnic on this day, it created a conflict….This is a unique race and unique experience and I’m sure more Trotters than just me want to hear the grimey slimey fun filled details. Just how deep was the MUD, just how bad was the SLUDGE, and how many sit ups and push ups were there and was that barrier really 10 feet tall????????

Race so popular some folks start training for it years in advance

If I were Doug, I’d painstakingly look up everyone’s times but I’m not.  That means I don’t go searching that stuff out so it doesn’t go in here unless someone spoon feeds it to me. Uh…any one got any spoons out there????  ANYONE WANNA RAT ANYONE OUT??? If so, let beakbytes@verizon.net know.  I‘d hate to totally make up an entire race results story ..wait, no I wouldn’t, but trust me, you all would!

OK…some data popped up:

TINO  may have gotten chased by that Rhino because he finished in 23.05 and how many push ups did that time include??? Picking up babies to change diapers must be paying off in the arm muscle department!  He  took  17th of 124 in his age and 117th of I have no idea how many but the numbers went up to at least 1,353.

LESLIE D. got through in 26.42 which placed her 18th of 137 in her age and 380th over all.

ERICA K. made it in 32.05, for 32nd of 137 and 785th over all.

I see a listing for “TRACEY SCHOTT” which makes me wonder if that’s our Tracey…if so, she finished in 34.48 for 87th of 137 and 968th over all.

       THE LAS VEGAS TRI

The WE TRI HARDER‘ Gals (Darcy H. , Karrie C. and Leslie D.) spent last weekend sizzlin’ in the sun at the Las Vegas Olympic distant tri.  A quick review of the race finishing stats shows me they weren’t the only ones fryin’…even the speedster men in that most competitive of age groups -30 to 34-had difficulty breaking 45 min for the run. Here’s what Darcy had to say about the experience:
….
I finished another triathlon. I thought I was going to die. I wanted to quite badly, but I finished! It was hot and long. I swam almost a mile in a lake, rode my bike for 25 miles and then ran/walked (I admit – it was hot!) 6 miles.
Darcy
.
GIVE THOSE GALS A HAND!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.
MORE GAL’S DESERVING “A HAND” or two:
.
It appears that grueling ’Fry-atholans’ came in three’s during the end of September. Kim P. and Brigid F. both got to ‘enjoy’ character enhancing  tri’s on 28 Sept.
.
Kim P got to practice her mt biking skills at her tri in San Luis Obispo.  She had to contend with a mile long rock garden planted in the middle of the bike course plus hills high enough to be spotted by Martians on their home turf on both bike and run portions of her race. I haven’t heard word on how she did and she wasn’t at pizza tonight so I can only hope this wasn’t a case of the course that ate the girl.
.
Brigid raced in the inaugural Orange County Oly distance Tri and it sounded like the course could’ve used ice cubes by the buckets to make it more user friendly in the temperature dept.  I checked out the race results and saw that the tri drew in a very large number of triathletes willing to melt in the sun. Brigid must not have melted too badly since she came home with 3rd place in age out of 37.
